Made up of four distinctly different sounds - Queen Charlotte, Kenepuru, Pelorus and Mahau - at the top of New Zealand's South Island, these winding waterways are why 20% of New Zealand's coastline lies within this region. The area is known for boating, fishing, diving and wildlife viewing and supports a hugely diverse seafood offering, both wild and farmed, along with dairy and cattle farming along the shores. The Marlborough Sounds has many clusters of holiday houses and accommodation offerings, with two main coastal towns, Picton and Havelock. One of the most gruelling ways to experience both the scenery and food of this area is the 70 kilometre Queen Charlotte Track. You can walk, bike or even kayak this track with accommodation and cafés dotted along the way.
