Smith & McKenzie is designed as a tribute to the old New York steakhouse. Inside is a blend of industrial and modern themes combined with historical butchery elements. The warm, industrial décor draws on themes from traditional butcher shops, through the use of warm wood, stainless steel, and butchers blocks. The space succeeds in being simultaneously rustic, inviting, and luxurious with rich details. Interior details include an homage to a traditional 'meat locker' interior with finished rimu planks covering part of the length of the upstairs wall, butcher blocks recessed into the bar, and vintage meat hooks that have been transformed into hanging lights above the restaurant bars. These features are offset against a towering steel back bar display and modern glass wine rack.
